# Rest as an ambition

**About this collection**

Vitality can sound exhausting. An ordinary, attentive morning seems an appealing ambition to me.

## The name Arizona Vitality Clinics

Published research on DSIP, sleep and waking occupies me here at Arizona Vitality Clinics. The title belongs to this research site; it does not name a healthcare business. There are no appointments, prescriptions, medical consultations or orders to arrange here. There is no clinical service here, and nothing on these pages is medical advice.

For me, Arizona evokes strong light and a place in the shade. I like an idea of vitality roomy enough to include rest. A paper about the morning after sleep seems at home in that image, even when its findings leave the hopeful question unsettled.

## Why DSIP interested me

The [small insomnia experiment's next-day observation](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7028502/) was a welcome departure from my expectation that everything would revolve around sleep itself. The [review's weak sleep evidence and unresolved biology](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16539679/) then made an easy conclusion impossible.

That tension suits my temperament. Awkward company gives a result somewhere to prove itself. If the case for a restful morning becomes stronger, I will be glad to see it; for now, the disagreements are too interesting to smooth away. A stronger case would have to carry both sides of that record: the attraction of the next-day observation and the later doubts about the sleep claim. I would welcome such a case. Until then, curiosity seems a more honest response than confidence.

The [fall in DSIP-like material at sleep onset](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8745061/) is an especially good companion to that wish. A rising sleep signal seemed an easy guess. Instead, the decline asks for a closer account of the transition itself. I enjoy that interruption: it makes the hopeful story answer to an awkward measurement.

At Arizona Vitality Clinics I pore over published research on sleep and waking; the site is an essay collection, not a business, and offers no medical advice.
