DSIP reading list
The small insomnia experiment starts the question. The sleep-onset and hormone papers make it harder to answer.
The opening experiment
The human insomnia experiment is the starting point for the morning question. For the most unexpected change of direction, I would turn next to the fall in circulating DSIP-like material as sleep began.
The 2006 review supplies the sharpest challenge to the broad sleep claim. The rabbit, bed-rest and hormone papers below fill out the disagreements and the particular experimental settings. The list includes animal and isolated-tissue work as well as human studies; each essay identifies which kind of experiment it is discussing.
